• Flaking rust or white powder inside the firebox. This is creosote mixed with oxidized metal. In Long Beach’s marine climate, the salt load in the air speeds up 316L corrosion once the factory passivation layer is compromised by heat cycling. We see this most in homes within a mile of the shore.
• Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. A liner with pinholes or separated seams lets combustion moisture condense in the cooler upper flue, then leak through the brick. The stain pattern usually tracks the flue path, not random roof leaks.
• Smoke smell in upstairs rooms when the fireplace isn’t running. This means the liner has lost its seal at a joint or the top plate, and negative pressure in the house is pulling attic air down through the compromised flue. It’s a carbon monoxide pathway even when you’re not burning.

There’s exactly one thing a homeowner can safely check: shine a flashlight up the firebox and look for visible gaps, heavy rust scaling, or debris that wasn’t there last season. If you see any of that, stop. Do not attempt to pull or replace a flue liner yourself.

The risks are specific and serious. A failed liner removal often requires cutting the old material in sections while working at roof height. The new liner must be properly insulated to prevent overheating the surrounding framing, and the top plate must be sealed with high-temp silicone rated to 600°F - standard caulk off-gasses and fails.
